Red Sox pitchers who clinched a post season Series: From Dinneen to Papelbon

When doing my salute to Jed Lowrie, I made a note that of the 16 post season series won by the Red Sox, three ended on an offensive walk off play by the Red Sox.

Larry Gardner hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning of Game 8 to end the 1912 World Series.
David Ortiz hit a walk off 2 run homer in the 10th of Game 3 to clinch the 2004 Division Series.
And Jed Lowrie slapped a series ending single in Game 4 of the 2008 Division Series.

But in double checking that fact, I reviewed the end of each series the Sox won and saw the names of each pitcher who threw the last pitch to clinch a post season series for Boston.

Some were names forgotten by all but the most studious baseball historian.
One is one of the biggest names in Red Sox history.

Two of the great clutch relievers in Boston history are on the list.
And two relievers usually associated with blowing games had a moment of glory on the mound.

Those of you who know me know I am mildly obsessed with the pitchers who are on the mound when a series ends.

And in case any other Red Sox fan is out there wondering "Who are all the pitchers to clinch a post season series for my team?" consider your question answered.

Here are the pitchers, the game they pitched, and how was the last out recorded.

So there you have it.
Papelbon is the only one to have done it twice. And I am sure Calvin Schiraldi and Eric Gagne are honored to be on a list with Pedro Martinez.

I love that Pedro relieved Lowe in 1999...
Lowe saved Pedro's clincher in 2003...
And Pedro came out of the bullpen to relieve Lowe in 2004.

There is a nice circle of life there.

And I'm glad to see solid veterans like Dick Drago and Alan Embree here.

All of them deserve Red Sox fan's respect (yes even Calvin and Gagne.)

Hopefully I can add to this list soon.

Red Sox fans... remember THIS Jonathan Papelbon

Jonathan Papelbon is no longer a member of the Boston Red Sox.
When he walked off the mound that awful night in Baltimore, that was his last day pitching for Boston.

He signed a big mongo contract with the Phillies. Four years and $50 million.

I'm not saying the Red Sox should have matched that deal.
He will be 34 years old when it is over.
And most closers have about a 5 or 6 window of being really good. Papelbon has already had 6 solid years as a closer.

And cynically I can say "I'd rather have him breakdown on someone else's dime."
The Red Sox got his young energetic All Star closer days and the Phillies will pay for his expensive 30s.

But let's NOT be cynical.

Let's celebrate Jonathan Papelbon.

He came up as an energetic spot starter down the stretch in 2005. It's too bad Francona didn't stick him into the closer role. The Red Sox needed a closer in that stretch run (Schilling and Timlin couldn't cut it) and the Red Sox lost the Division by one game.

Keith Foulke broke down at the start of the 2006 season and Papelbon stepped in. The symbolism is wonderful in retrospect. Keith Foulke and Jonathan Papelbon are the only two pitchers since 1918 to clinch a World Series for the Red Sox... and the baton was passed during that first series in '06.

The Sox had a cool, cocky and arrogant closer. And we LOVED it!
He was fun.
He was silly.
He did the whole Riverdance routine.
He had Shipping Off To Boston as his theme song.
And more often than not, he shut down the opposition.

Three times his season ERA was sub 2.00.
In 2006, he finished with a 0.92 ERA. His strikeout per 9 innings regularly was in double digits. And in the 2005, 2007 and 2008 post season, he posted a 0.00 ERA.

And let's never forget the wonderful party that was the clinching Game 7 of the 2007 ALCS. The Red Sox clinched the 2004 AL Pennant and World Series on the road. But in '07, they had their pennant celebration at Fenway. And while the final score was lopsided, he faced the tying run at the plate in the 8th inning. He got out of it before Pedroia and Youkilis put the game out of reach in the bottom of the 8th.

And NEVER forget that he struck out Seth Smith and gave Red Sox fans a second World Series title to savor.

Never forget he came out in the 7th inning of the great comeback of Game 5, 2008 ALCS and threw 2 key shutout innings to let the Sox avoid elimination.

And never forget that when Lester, Lackey and Beckett were bombing, Papelbon was accountable to the media and gave his all, even after he lost the final game.

And never forget that he was fun.

Red Sox fan got a lot of great memories courtesy of Papelbon, including a World Series clincher.

So wish him well, Red Sox fans.
Say thank you for the memories.

And one more time, for old time sake... Let's Ship Out To Boston.

September 19 - 6-5 loss to Baltimore. (Kyle Weiland gets bombed, Darnell McDonald drops a ball, a fair ball is called foul... just a bad day all around.)
September 20 - 7-5 loss to Baltimore. ( hit a 3 run double with 2 outs in the 8th to give Baltimore the win.)
September 21 - 6-4 loss to Baltimore. (Crawford goes 3-4 but Beckett can't hold onto a lead as the Orioles rally in the 8th.)
September 26 - 6-3 loss to Baltimore. (An inside the park homer off of Ellsbury's glove put the game away and the Rays caught Boston.)
September 28 - 4-3 loss in Baltimore. (The Red Sox season implodes as the Orioles rally with 2 outs and nobody on to shock Papelbon and send the Red Sox spiraling.)

Yup. The Red Sox won 2 more games that they should have lost than lost games they should have won.

In a season with a historic collapse, you'd think the opposite would be true. But using this as a guide, the Sox could have been described as a clutch team.

Just goes to show how numbers can be deceiving.

A win.

2 chopped off of the magic number.

A day chopped off of the schedule.

A little less tension in the air.

Beckett looked solid, so not ALL the pressure is on Lester.

Bard was shaky but held the lead, so maybe his confidence is coming back.

Ortiz and Crawford were hitting the ball well.

If the Red Sox just split the next two games, then they will have a 4 game lead with 10 to play and the magic number will be 7.

And oh yeah, there will be 7 out of 10 games against the Orioles.

I'm not saying all the work has been done. It has just gotten a little easier.

Jonathan Papelbon will owe Daniel Bard a few million dollars

Jonathan Papelbon's contract is up after this year. And after his disastrous 2009 playoff performance and a subpar year last season, the Red Sox seemed ready to bid adieu to Pap, take the two draft picks and move on.

The reason they could afford to do that? The great Daniel Bard, of course! Bard was a kick butt prospect who seemed all but ready to assume the closer role when Papelbon brought his Irish dig elsewhere for big money and an inevitable breakdown (which makes him a prime candidate for the Mets, Cubs or Orioles.)

Have you seen how awful he has been lately?
He's lost 3 games already... THIS MONTH! I don't know what his ERA for September but going into today it was over 17. And after coughing up the game today (which would have given the Red Sox a little breathing room when the Rays show up tomorrow.

Heck, it was a game where Lackey actually settled down and wasn't HORRIBLE.

And Bard blew it.

So when Papelbon goes into negotiations this November, the opening sentence should be "So... you want Bard closing games?"

And then toss a few million bucks to Bard. Papelbon will get the big deal and he wouldn't have if Bard was even adequate down the stretch.

May 8 - 9-5 win against the Twins. (Dice-K lets up 3 runs in the first but settles down as the Red Sox clobber Carl Pavano.)

May 9 - 2-1 win against the Twins. (A bullpen breakdown cost Beckett the decision but Cark Crawford ended the game with an 11th inning walk off hit.)
May 13 - 5-4 win in the Bronx. (Youkilis homers off of Joba and Bard and Papelbon make it more interesting than it needed to be.)
May 15 - 7-5 win in the Bronx. (Sox fall behind 4-1 but come back as Youk, Papi and Salty all homer.)

July 5 - 3-2 win against Toronto. (Lester gets hurt but Darnel McDonald throws out the tying run at the plate to end the game.)

April 5 - 3-1 loss in Cleveland. (The Sox drop their 4th straight as the bats are dead in Cleveland.)
April 7 - 1-0 loss in Cleveland. (Sox blow a great Lester performance on a squeeze bunt and Darnell McDonald overrunning the bag to end the game.)
April 12 - 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay. (A solid Lester performance is wasted as Kyle Farnsworth of all people shuts down the Sox.)
April 15 - 7-6 loss to Toronto. (Bobby Jenks implodes with a 4 run seventh inning as the Red Sox waste Pedroia and Youkilis homers and a clutch RBI double by Scuatro.
