OK, show of hands, Red Sox fans.
How many of you heard of Clayton Mortensen before today?

I can't raise my hand. He's 27 years old and has been bounced around a few times.

He had a 9.42 ERA in 64 innings last year... in AAA.
That's disconcerting.
But he pitched OK for the Rockies in 16 games.

And he was a decent enough prospect in the A's and Cardinals system that maybe he can be a decent arm out of the pen.

I for one am sad to see Marco Scutaro go. I liked him. He played hard and played anywhere on the infield. Plus it is fun to hear Boston fans say "MAH-co."

In fact because this trade happened on the Eve of the Patriots/Ravens game, I am guessing that most Sox fans missed this trade... and come spring training when Jose Iglesias is struggling, a bunch of Sox fans will say "Wheh is MAH-co?"

And when informed that he is with the Rockies in exchange for Clayton Mortensen, the general response will be "WHO?"

And then there will be a frantic Google Search that will lead you all to this page.

Good luck, Clayton. You need a nickname.

Man that is a lousy way to start a game. There's not a lot positive to take out of the game today. Hey! Bard didn't suck!

Rallying against Rivera while talking to the cable company

The Red Sox just couldn't score... no matter how many runners they put in scoring position and no matter how many pitchers were on the ropes. The Sox were going to face Rivera in the 9th.



And my wife asked me to make sure that our HBO was activated in time for True Blood.



So in a one run game at Fenway, I was on hold with Time Warner Cable.

What did it matter? The Sox were going to lose.



I finally got hold of a human being as the bottom of the 9th began.

I began talking with the operator, giving her my account information, when I saw Marco Scutaro launch a double off of the wall.



Now I can't bellow or scream with an operator on the phone. So I jumped up and started pumping my fists while giving the last 4 of my social.



After Ellsbury's bunt I was literally jumping up and down while calmly making my requests.

Pedroia came up. Tying run on third.



"Can you please change the channel to check if it is on?"



I wanted to scream "ARE YOU CRAZY! PEDROIA CAN TIE IT UP!!!"



I quickly flipped. True Blood was on. And back in time to see Pedroia launch a game tying sacrifice fly.



Fist pumping in the air, she asked "Is there anything else I can do for you?"

"Yeah, you can push one more run across !"

"Excuse me sir?"

"Thank you."



Then, with the Red Sox in extra innings, they scored the winning run in time for my wife to watch her show.''



So yeah, the Sox won the game and the series... a victory they just couldn't put on hold.

For the people who STILL think the job of a hitter is to "get on base" may I please present last night's 14 inning Red Sox loss to the lowly Royals and the Yankees win over the Mariners.

The Red Sox got 13 hits and 3 walks. 16 men got on base for Boston last night.

The Yankees got 11 hits and 3 walks. 14 men got on base for New York last night.

So if you take the point of view that the batter's job is to get on base, then the Red Sox had a more successful night than the Yankees.

OK, granted the Red Sox played an extra inning game so they had more chances to get on base. But more Sox players did their job than Yankees players. You can show me as much on your Fantasy Baseball team.

Would ANYONE in their right mind say that the Red Sox had a more successful night offensively than the Yankees?

Of course not. Because the batter's job is to PRODUCE RUNS!

Getting on base is one way to do it, but it isn't the only tool in the shed.

Marco Scutaro got a basehit that improved his average, on base percentage, WAR, VORP, OPS+, total bases and 100 other stats I don't understand... and walked back to the dugout with his head hanging low because he got thrown out at second right after botching a game winning squeeze play.

Last night's loss was just stupid.

The Red Sox left men in scoring position in the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 9th, 11th and 13th.

And that DOESN'T include Josh Reddick being at third with one out in the 12th against someone named Louis Coleman.

If you think that getting on base is the main job of a hitter, then by definition you must consider those 7 innings mentioned above to be a success.

I looked at the scoreboard.

The Red Sox lost to a lousy Royals team.

And my teeth are grinding.

May 9 - 2-1 win against the Twins. (A bullpen breakdown cost Beckett the decision but Cark Crawford ended the game with an 11th inning walk off hit.)
May 13 - 5-4 win in the Bronx. (Youkilis homers off of Joba and Bard and Papelbon make it more interesting than it needed to be.)
May 15 - 7-5 win in the Bronx. (Sox fall behind 4-1 but come back as Youk, Papi and Salty all homer.)
May 16 - 8-7 win against the Orioles. (Down 6-0 after 6 innings, the Sox rally and win it with a 2 run walk off double by Adrian Gonzalez)

I'm not saying the Red Sox need to SWEEP every series. But they need to produce runs against teams like the Royals.

Why?

Because THAT IS THEIR JOB!!!

Cautious Optimism

I've been declaring the Red Sox dead for a while now... and I am not claiming they have pulled a Lazarus yet... but I must say that I am feeling good that they are not crumbling down the stretch to irrelevance like the 2001 and 2006 teams did.

And they are showing some grit, responding to a Seattle comeback with a 3 run inning of their own and having Lackey grind out 8 innings... even though he didn't have his best stuff.

So here we are. The Sox won a good game and the Yankees lost a game where they had 2 minor leaguers in the starting line up, a minor league starting pitchers and injuries keeping Jeter and A-Rod out of the starting 9.

And now 6 games in the loss column separate the two teams.

6 is still a lot.
But not as big as it has been.

If the Red Sox sweep the Mariners, then consider my attention caught.

Until then, they are simply showing resolve.

But I'll be cautiously optimistic and update the tally.
