Hey Red Sox... sign Omar Vizquel

I am dead serious. Bring him on board. How much would he cost the Sox? $1 million? $2 million for one year?

The Red Sox have wisely stayed away from this year's free agent class with the exception of Nick Punto who isn't exactly a superstar. He's there to give the Red Sox some infield depth.

But why not bring in Omar Vizquel as well?

One of the last remaining players from the 1980s is still floating out there. Why not tack on a 24th year to his career?

And what would his main purpose on the team be?

To start some games at short and help break in Jose Iglesias. What better mentor could the Red Sox shortstop of the future have than possibly the best defensive shortstop of all time?

And one who literally can say "I've been in the major leagues longer than you've been alive!"

Vizquel played 143 games in 1989.

Iglesias was born in January 1990.

Having Vizquel as depth and an unofficial coach could only help the Red Sox as they build towards 2013. $2 million to help develop the shortstop of the future is a bargain.

Compare that to the $44 million spent on Edgar Renteria and Julio Lugo.

And with 2,841 hits, the Red Sox can watch him creep slowly to 3,000.

Combine that with Tim Wakefield needing 6 wins to tie and 7 to pass Roger Clemens and Cy Young for most ever wins by a Red Sox pitcher, you could have two of the slowest and most painful build ups to a baseball milestone ever happening at the same time!

And seeing that I don't think the Red Sox are winning squat in 2012, why not have THAT reason to go to the park?

Come on Sox! It's not like he's going to cost the Red Sox a draft pick or a long term deal. Bring him on board!

Besides, if he makes it to the Hall of Fame (which I think he will) then there will be another plaque with "Boston (A.L.)" on it. And that's not bad.

Tim Wakefield is 100 wins away from 300!

Admit it, Red Sox fans. You thought today was a loss.

When Wakefield couldn't hold onto second and third inning leads, you thought it was going to be one of those nights. It was going to be like one of those 11-10 losses like the Sox had last week.

And once again, it was going to be a night where Wakefield wasn't going to get a win.

And then... suddenly... it happened.

The Red Sox just started scoring and kept scoring. And they scored so much that even Toronto's 6 runs couldn't make a dent in the lead.

200 wins for Wakefield.
And if he somehow gets 7 wins between the rest of this year and next year, he will have the most wins in the history of the Red Sox.

Two sad things about the Red Sox

Tim Wakefield might never win another game in the major leagues. Seriously, if he couldn't get the victory TONIGHT it might just never happen.

199 wins, an All Star appearance and 2 World Series rings (not to mention 3 ALCS wins against the Yankees) isn't shabby. That could be it.

As for this Red Sox, who tonight won as mindboggling an awful game as you can possibly experience, we might have to admit it.

They aren't winning the World Series.
They ARE making the playoffs... and that is cool. And it is great that we live in an age where winning the World Series is a realistic goal.

But that 8th inning was grotesque. And frankly this team is stumbling into October. They COULD pull a 2006 Cardinals and peak at the right time.

Between you and me, I think they will more likely pull a 2007 Angels and fade away.

It's best we lower our expectations.
Be happy that the Red Sox will, barring a monumental collapse, be playing October baseball.
And be happy for any win.

And REALLY hope the Yankees don't win it.

Seriously. Nobody thought he was going to get 199 wins in the big leagues.

Maybe 200 is a little bit crazy.



Either way, these last 6 games have been agonizing.

He's pitched well some games. Awfully in others. But tonight was the worst.



When Darnell McDonald pitched the 9th, I thought "If the Sox score 12 runs here, Darnell McDonald and not Tim Wakefield will get the win."



Then it hit me.

Maybe Francona should just put Wakefield in every single tie game in the middle innings.

Luck and circumstance will give him a win eventually!



Then this quest will be over.

Tim Wakefield might NEVER get his 200th win

Shouldn't we be entertaining that possibility?

I mean how many more chances will a 44 year old pitcher get to net a win?

If he couldn't get it tonight (with a 4-1 lead against the Royals) you can't help but wonder if it will ever happen.

But seriously? An 8 run inning by the Royals and a chance blown to leap frog the Yankees after A. J. Burnett imploded?

August 13 - 5-4 loss in Seattle. (Mariners score 5 in the first and the Red Sox come back falls short.)

Instead Alfredo Aceves keeps boosted his bizarrely large win total. And what looked like what going to be a deflating loss on the heels of the Yankees victory became yet another come from behind win and another solid day for the Sox. And if the key is to win series, then taking the first game of a three game set on the road is a good step.

April 8 - 9-6 win against the Yankees. (The Sox end their 6 game losing streak with a slugfest. John Lackey stinks but Phil Hughes stinks even more.)

April 10 - 4-0 win against the Yankees. (Beckett and Sabathia duel in a game that was 1-0 until the late innings.)

April 20 - 5-3 win in Oakland. (Red Sox survive a lead off homer and two bases loaded situations and facing the tying run at the plate to win their first road game.)

April 21 - 4-2 win in Anaheim. (The Red Sox stranded 15 men on base and Josh Beckett's went 8 strong with no decision. But the Sox rallied in the 11th to win.)

April 22 - 4-3 win in Anaheim. (Peter Bourjos makes a 2 run errors and the Red Sox survive a bizarre passed ball by Jarrod Saltalamacchia that let a run scored from second.)

May 9 - 2-1 win against the Twins. (A bullpen breakdown cost Beckett the decision but Cark Crawford ended the game with an 11th inning walk off hit.)

April 5 - 3-1 loss in Cleveland. (The Sox drop their 4th straight as the bats are dead in Cleveland.)

April 7 - 1-0 loss in Cleveland. (Sox blow a great Lester performance on a squeeze bunt and Darnell McDonald overrunning the bag to end the game.)

April 12 - 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay. (A solid Lester performance is wasted as Kyle Farnsworth of all people shuts down the Sox.)

April 15 - 7-6 loss to Toronto. (Bobby Jenks implodes with a 4 run seventh inning as the Red Sox waste Pedroia and Youkilis homers and a clutch RBI double by Scuatro.
