The key to any road series is just try and win take 2 of 3 or split a 4 game series.

Well two games in against the Twins and they are playing with house money. Yeah it was a strange game to be sure.



Any game where you are looking to be rescued by Darnell McDonald's BAT is a strange day. But I am not complaining.



Any day where Matt Albers blows the save but gets the win is an odd day... but again, I don't care which pitcher gets the win as long as they are wearing a Red Sox uniform.



And yes, having Daniel Bard pitch the 7th isn't IDEAL... but did they win?

Then that's all that matters now.

April 8 - 9-6 win against the Yankees. (The Sox end their 6 game losing streak with a slugfest. John Lackey stinks but Phil Hughes stinks even more.)

Lester tonight

The Blue Jays actually tied the game last night

I listened to the last inning of the Red Sox/Blue Jays game last night and I heard a real thriller.
A tight game became razor thin at the end.

With 2 outs, JohnMcDonald singled home Edwin Encarnacion for the tying run and Jonathan Papelbon blew the save.

That's what really happened.

That's not what was recorded. That's not what history will tell us.
History will tell us a mistake.

History will tell us that Darnell McDonald threw out Encarnacion at the plate. A little research will tell us that Jason Varitek blocked the plate and Encarnacion couldn't touch the plate.

But that's not what happened.

The replay showed that in fact Encarnacion missed home plate at first but his left leg touched home plate before Varitek actually put a tag on him.

Despite Darnell McDonald's wonderful throw and Varitek's gritty defense, Encarnacion scored.

Umpire Brian Knight got the call wrong.
It was a tough call. It was a bang bang play involving lots of movement at home and I am not blaming him.

But why should we pretend that he got the call right?
He didn't. I saw the replay.

And do you know what? It sours the game a little for me. It makes a win, that was already bittersweet with the Lester injury, less satisfying. The Red Sox didn't earn it.

One of the most common illogical complaints I hear from people who are against instant replay is "it will take away the HUMAN ELEMENT."

Let me ask you something. Isn't John McDonald getting a clutch hit off of an All Star closer with 2 outs in the 9th inning part of the human element?

Isn't Edwin Encarnacion making a great slide when he realizes that he doesn't have a clean lane to the plate part of the human element?

They both did something clutch and terrific on the road against a division rival and they are denied being credited as such because... why? Because technology is scary? Because you'd rather have something done now than have it be right? Because first impressions are better than reality?

It's clearly not "The Human Element."

And this is coming from a Red Sox fan who benefited from the blown call.

I'd rather my team earn their victories.

Great win! But PLEASE don't be too hurt, Lester!

Yeah yeah yeah. The Red Sox got great pitching, clutch hitting and a heartstopping throw to the plate from Darnell McDonald (who should have been credited with the save, not Papelbon.)

It should be a great night and thinking of how the Sox are keeping pace with the Yankees and gained ground against Tampa Bay in the Wild Card hunt.

And yet all I can think is "Is Lester HURT?!"
I mean how many boxer shorts got a little browner in New England when he didn't come out for the 5th inning?

PLEASE be a precaution. With Dice-K and Buchholz hurt and Lackey stinking up the joint, we can't afford to have anyone else on the DL.

Dead Even Heading Into The Break

As I took the weekend off from blogging this weekend, I kept an eye on the Sox of course, but mainly only taking a peak at the final scores.

Maybe it was for the better on Saturday as John Lackey once again came up short and blew a lead for the Sox... but Sunday looked like a lot of fun as the Sox turned a potential no hitter by Jesse Litch into a one run win for Dice-K.

And thus ends a strange first half... a first half where the Sox were ravaged by injuries to almost every key player and had the Rays and Yankees beat them up... meltdowns by the bullpen and blown opportunities on the basepaths.

And yet are one of only 6 teams in all of baseball with 50 wins or more.
They are on pace to win about 93 games... which means a better second half could bring them to the 95-96 win total that is probably needed for a trip to October.

And as my Teeth Grinder/Dodged Bullet tally shows, they have stolen as many wins as they have blown losses.

Is it the insane expectations of Red Sox fans that makes this first half seem like a let down?
Is it the fact that the contributions are coming from the Daniel Navas and Darnell McDonalds of the world while the Josh Becketts and Jacoby Ellsburys have been rendered useless almost all season?

It is an odd season... a season where more than once I've been perfectly content to throw my hands in the air and say "We're in transition" and also I've thought "Holy Cow, if this team gets healthy, look out!"

It certainly hasn't been a DULL first half for the Red Sox. 52 of the 88 games they've played could have gone either way. That's better than 59% of the games.

Now if the Red Sox disabled list wasn't so star studded, I'd feel a little more confident about our post season odds.

Either way, let's update it for the last time of the unofficial first half.

June 24 - 13-11 win in Colorado. (The bullpen lets up 9 runs in 5 innings, but Pedroia homers 3 times including with 2 outs in the 10th to win a wild and stupid game.)
June 26 - 4-2 win in San Francisco. (An injury running the bases takes Buchholz out in the second, but the bullpen and Mike Cameron's bat and glove win the game.)

I don't think the Red Sox should do anything drastic. Just wait for the All Star team to come off of the DL. Maybe they'll be rested and ready to go. Or maybe it will be an early trip to the Golf Course.

Either way, the second half should be interesting.

Loves when the Red Sox win... even when I don't know who they are!

I looked at today's Red Sox box score and I saw Niuman Romero got into the game as a pinch runner.

Also I saw Robert Manuel got an inning of work in with some mop up duty.

I had never heard of either one before and I follow the Red Sox pretty damn closely.

If I told you that on the 3rd of July, the Red Sox DL would have more post season heroes than the line up and players like Daniel Nava, Darnell McDonald and Kevin Cash would be in the game, you'd assume the Sox season was lost.

Kevin Cash is back? I would rather have Elmo Creator Kevin Clash in the line up!

But your assumptions would be wrong.

After today's game, the Red Sox remain 1/2 a game behind the Yankees and tied for the most wins in baseball.

No need to go all Butch and Sundance on this team and ask "Who are those guys?"
I don't care, as long as they wear the Sox uniform.

Who the hell is Daniel Nava?

I have never heard of Daniel Nava. And I assume if you are not a member of the Nava family that YOU haven't heard of him either.

One thing I can bet is the Phillies didn't have a scouting report on him either... as the former independent league hitter and a guy from Redwood City who evidently was a skeleton in high school hit a grand slam on the first pitch he saw.

Between Darnell McDonald and Daniel Nava, the Red Sox have gotten some wonderful contributions from guys that I am convinced never heard of themselves!

The only good thing about April is it is ENDING

I had a blog post already written in my head...

Yet another bullet was dodged, thanks to a pair of homers by J.D. Drew, a decent game by John Lackey and a key walk by Darnell McDonald.

I was going to write about how the Red Sox, despite a slew of set backs including Beckett and Ortiz being miserable, Wakefield being demoted, Cameron and Ellsbury being hurt and losing 6 of 7 at home to the Yankees and Tampa, were ending April with a winning record.

But noooooooooooooo.

Miguel Tejada had to homer and the O's had to win it in 10.
And I started thinking of Marco Scutaro swinging at ball four with the runners moving in the 5th... and the strike em out, throw em out double play turned a bases loaded 1 out inning into a goose egg.

This month stunk. The Red Sox are in 4th place with mediocre pitching, inconsistent hitting and an unhappy clubhouse.

And oh yeah, the Rays and the Yankees are both playing like possessed teams.

Turn the page and roll the Dice (K). It's a brand new month.
Sadly it IS time to update the tally.

Seriously... can we have ONE WIN this year where I can be relaxed and maybe give the regulars half a day off?

I mean don't get me wrong, I LOVE that the Red Sox have gone 7-2 since they hit bottom after the 4 game sweep by the Rays.

I love that their bats picked up Beckett, that Buchholz and Lester picked up the bullpen and that Darnell McDonald picked up the entire team, including going 2-3 with an RBI tonight.

I love that despite all the turmoil, injuries and lousy starts, the Red Sox can still finish April with a winning record if they can beat Baltimore on Friday night.

But MAN, I could use a relaxing win and not a game that has me fidgeting and checking the score like a crazed addict!

Oh well... time to update the board.

Are these two nice games... or is this love?

The Red Sox won two games as dramatically as you could in the last two nights... And today's win was as wild as you get.

J. D. Drew's grand slam gives the Sox the lead.
Josh Hamilton's homer tied it up.

Darnell McDonald hits another homer and Varitek makes a great block at the plate... 11 innings for the win.

Now is this the Red Sox playing out the averages? Or is it the moment when I realized this Sox team is better than I thought it was and that I am falling in love with them.

Swapping out Ortiz for Lowell seems to given the Sox a lift.
Somehow Varitek is hitting extra base hits.
And the bullpen was solid.

Then again I am not a fan of this Rangers team... and with a 5-9 record and a positive cocaine test looming over him, Manager Ron Washington should be nervous.

It could be love or just some lustful wins after a drought.

All I know is it is time to update the board.

Sully Baseball called for Darnell McDonald's promotion

The other day I wrote about the Red Sox hitting rock bottom and I suggested they bring up Darnell McDonald.

You can look it up.

Now I am not saying I knew he'd be an instant folk hero in Boston... stroking a game tying homer in his first at bat and winning it in the 9th.

But I saw his stats in Pawtucket and thought "Hey, maybe he can be a spark."

Maybe he will.

Maybe a guy getting another shot at the bigs... an unknown with no expectations... a scrappy player who needs to play hard for his salary... maybe that's what the Red Sox needed.

A single spark can start a fire.

And Darnell McDonald was holding a sparkler tonight!

And held a "dodging bullets clinic."
