Some cold Fenway years are coming

I had really hoped that I'd be talking about Game 1 and 2 versus Texas and how the Red Sox fared.

Instead I am looking at an aftermath of a collapse so horrible that we Red Sox fans are thinking "How did THIS happen again?"

(And Braves fans are thinking "Thanks for deflecting attention away from us.")

Now there is a logical way to look at The Great Collapse of 2011.
The team's pitching staff was thin. Buchholz and Dice-K were hurt, Wakefield is done, Lackey is a bust and Andrew Miller showed why the Tigers and Marlins gave up on him.

Throw in some key injuries (Youk and Drew) and an inconsistent Lester down the stretch (and a shockingly awful Daniel Bard) and you have a lousy September.

Logically you look at it and say "Get rid of some deadwood, use the money coming off the books from Drew and Dice-K for arms but don't get seduced by a Lackey deal again."

Instead what is the aftermath?
Francona is gone.
The clubhouse is fractured.
Some of the not exactly cuddly personalities are running the asylum.
Theo, whose post 2007 record hasn't exactly been sterling, is escaping blame.

And no doubt Papelbon, Ortiz, Wakefield, Varitek and others will be gone soon.

Get used to John Lackey in a Sox uniform.
Don't expect Carl Crawford to go anywhere.

Someone else will be the manager.

This era is over. And with it be prepared to have some lean times and some REALLY embarrassing baseball.

Look at the Cubs and Mets. Big budget and big market teams who can't put a winner on the field. Two teams hamstrung by the "We just went for it" contracts of a few years ago. The managers have gone as have the post season appearances.

That's going to be the Red Sox starting in 2012.
Expensive, not competitive and hard to watch.

Oh I will root for them and hope to be surprised. But everything is pointing to a bunch of empty Octobers in Fenway.

The best teams I remember seeing in my life include the Yankees, Royals, Phillies and Dodgers of the late 1970s, early 1980s... the Mets of the mid 1980s... the A's from 1988-1992, the Blue Jays from the mid 1980s through the 1993 World Series... the Braves from 1991 to 2005... and the Joe Torre Yankees.

They all ended.

This era for the Red Sox is ending.
There will be another Red Sox champion. Maybe Pedroia and Ellsbury and Lester will be the veteran champions who lead that team.

But it won't be soon.
This is Philadelphia's time to shine.

And someday soon they will return to earth.
Just like the Sox did.

I don't like this

1 game separates the Red Sox and Yankees. Despite an amazing July when they went 20-6, the Red Sox still have the Yankees breathing down their necks.

OK, it is better on August 1 than on July 1. On July 1, the Sox trailed the Yankees by 2 1/2 games. On August 1, they are ahead... so I guess a 3 1/2 game swing in a month isn't bad.

But I hate losing games where the Sox score a bunch of runs.

And I hate seeing Lackey not exactly light the house on fire on the same day that the whole "When Buchholz comes back" mantra ended.

Now I AM glad the Indians are showing some resolve... but not at the Red Sox expense.

May 15 - 7-5 win in the Bronx. (Sox fall behind 4-1 but come back as Youk, Papi and Salty all homer.)

The Magic Number is down to 55. But the Sox need to be careful not to hand it back to the Yankees.

This losing stuff? I don't like it.

I'll say it... the Red Sox over babied Clay Buchholz

The Red Sox decided not to trade for Rich Harden.

Why? Because they already had an ace caliber pitcher who is always hurt!

Clay Buchholz has a stress fracture in his back. I don't think it is as bad as what Ralph Macchio had in The Outsiders, but just as destructive for the season.

Hasn't that been the mantra this season?

Get Lester and Buchholz healthy and the Sox could win the pennant.

Now what?

Lester is healthy and looks good and Beckett has been solid.

Lackey has been winning, but how long will THAT last?

Andrew Miller is not the ace that the Tigers and Marlins thought he was. He's a #5 pitcher.

Tim Wakefield is Russian Roulette.

And Eric Bedard will probably be in a full body cast by Labor Day.

The Red Sox pennant chances are no better than the Yankees, whose rotation we love to make fun of.

The Rangers pitching staff is miles ahead of the Red Sox and Yankees. I even put the Angels in front of us.

And I will say it. I can never rely on Clay Buchholz again.

I've been saying since 2007 that the Red Sox have been babying him.

They've been treating him with kid gloves to avoid injuries since he threw the no hitter. And what has he been since?

AN INJURY PRONE PITCHER!

Red Sox fans, ask yourself. If Buchholz were a Yankee, wouldn't you be throwing him in with Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain as pitchers with ability but whose bodies have betrayed them.

And here we have Clay Buchholz. It's his 5th big league season. He's 26. And he has pitched 100 innings a grand total of one time in his career.

All the while he has been treated with kid gloves and all of that love and care has put him on the shelf AGAIN!

He's another example of a babied pitcher. Instead of a reliable stud we have an injury prone frustration.

Any decent season the Sox get from Clay Buchholz MUST be considered a bonus from now on.

He is another pitcher ruined by kid gloves.

That was a decent road trip

When the Red Sox got swept by Chicago in the last days of May and the first day of June, they fell out of first place and were 2 games back of the Yankees.

The Bob Geren led A's were coming into town but I had my eyes on the upcoming 9 game road trip.

3 in the Bronx.
3 in Toronto.
3 in Tampa.

No cream puffs.
No tomato cans.

I thought "If they go 5-4, I'll be happy. They would have held their own."
And after the 3 game sweep of Oakland, off they went.

Now they are coming back and while the Stanley Cup may have overshadowed them a tad, how's an 8-1 trip for you?

Now last night made me nervous. When they couldn't knock David Price out of the game, I thought "Oh man, don't have this me a lost opportunity game!"

And when both Jed Lowrie and more importantly Clay Buchholz went down with injuries, I gave a big gulp.

But the Sox pulled through and come home to face a solid Brewers team.

I saw the Yankees lost...
I saw the Rays lost...
I saw the Red Sox had a lead in the 8th with Buchholz on the mound.

And I did the math. I figured out that if the Red Sox held on to their lead, the magic number to win the Division would be 116.

Then the roof caved in. Or at least a 2 run 2 out rally. And a Carl Crawford game ending double play with the tying run on third (Crawford homered... I can't get on him TOO much.)

I should NEVER start writing a blog post as if the Sox won BEFORE they win!

Wet and Salty

In so many ways these are my favorite kind of wins.

A well pitched game by Clay Buchholz continues to give me faith in the Red Sox pitching staff, especially after he wiggled out of several jams.

And in the 8th inning after a delay with 2 outs and nobody on, I was conceding the 8th inning. I thought "Come on Crawford, just get on base so we know the top of the order is coming up in the 9th."

And when he walked I thought "OK, we're probably not going to score here. But if the Sox could keep the Tigers off of the board then we know Ellsbury, Pedroia and Gonzalez will be coming up in the 9th!

I mean SURELY Saltalamacchia isn't going to do anything with 2 outs and a runner on first.

Bam! Off the wet wall and in comes Crawford.

Then comes the 9th. Old friend Victor Martinez doubles off of Papelbon and the pinch runner goes to third with 1 out.

I started thinking "OK, the Tigers are probably going to tie the game here... but Gonalez and Youk and Papi are coming up in the 9th. We can still win on a walk off."

Then Avila and Raburn strike out.
Game over.

I was already optimistic but it turned out to be a more direct route to happiness.

A win tomorrow and the 6 game losing streak has been matched in the other direction.

Red Sox don't get soaked

Well that wasn't so hard, was it?
Clay Buchholz pitches 5 strong with a big rain delay smack dab in the middle of things and the Red Sox pull out a win. And a pretty easy one at that.

It makes you wonder why they couldn't do that more often in the first month and a week.
Either way, I'll take it.

Dice-K tomorrow... let's get a few wins in a row.

Heavenly

The Angels were my pre season pick to win the AL Pennant.
They seem like a damn good team.

And yet they are 0-5 against the Red Sox this year.

In Non Red Sox games they are 16-8.

Go figure. This one turned into a laugher and I can't put it into the Dodged Bullet category... even with Weaver pitching a Buchholz looking shaky at times.

The nice fat 6 run 7th took any doubt out of this one.

Next is Lester versus Haren... MY Cy Young pick versus a guy that a lot of other people picked.

I'd like to see my pick go DOWN.
We'll see. The Sox - Angels games have been heaven for me so far.

Feet made of Clay

OK, maybe I was getting greedy.
But after getting such great pitching performances out of Beckett, Lester, Lackey and Dice-K, I was hoping out other All Star starter from last year would find his stuff.

Alas, Clay Buchholz once again looked ordinary and against the Orioles no less!

Get that ship right, Clay. I wasn't counting on Beckett nor Dice-K this season but I WAS counting on YOU!

I didn't want to win a game this weekend

I like starting a season in an 0-3 hole. It is more fun that way.

Seriously, this was a pretty lousy display by my Red Sox, picked by so many to go all the way. It was home run derby off of both Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz and frankly that makes me nervous.

I know it is against Texas and they are a good home run team. But what happened to "Good Pitching beats Good Hitting."

The Sox have an off day tomorrow and then Josh Beckett take the mound. Remember him? The guy who got lit up last year and this spring.

In terms of the "2011 Red Sox compared to hyped movies" template I made before the season started... this team is off like Superman Returns, the film where it just felt slightly off right from the beginning.

Let's hope things go up, up and away in Cleveland.

This is what I was afraid of with the Red Sox

At least there was no suspense in this game.

Yeah, I know it is early. But one reason I wasn't swept up in the pre season hype was I felt like there were too many assumptions about the starting rotation. Lester and Buchholz were written in ink and the assumption was either Lackey, Beckett or Dice-K were going to be bouncing back.

Well we had better HOPE so. John Lackey became John Lacking or John Shelacky. He gave the Sox 9... sadly it was 9 earned runs against.

I would like to NOT start the season being swept, especially with and off day on Monday and Josh Beckett's potentially agonizing first start of the year on Tuesday.

I know the Red Sox will eventually win a game. I'd like to not have to wait for it.

How many Buchholzes are we going to get?

You get the feeling that Theo is messing with us Red Sox fans?
We now have two Buchholzes for 2011... just in time for us to get confused during a game.

"Buchholz got hammered."
"Which one?"

And it gets muddled if the good Buchholz pitches poorly or the mediocre one pitches great.

I hear Theo is working on bringing in another pitcher named Daisuke O'Malley.

I don't often quote Don Henley but...

... all I can say to Red Sox fans is "Don't look back, you can never look back."

When I saw that Clay Buchholz was showing off his ace stuff and A. J. Burnett was proving that he shouldn't even be allowed to BUY a playoff ticket... I did what every single Red Sox fan on the planet Earth did:

Lament what happened last night in the Bronx.

3 outs away from the sweep... and tonight we'd be 3 GAMES BACK in the loss column.

But we can't look back.

We don't know how we'd play with the pressure on and how the Yankees could have rebounded after an embarrassing sweep at home.

You can't just replace one detail of the past with another one and expect all the other details to remain the same.

Did we learn ANYTHING from Back to the Future?

So just savor the fact that the Red Sox will probably win 90 games and the Yankees look vulnerable going into October.

And oh yeah... technically the Red Sox are still alive.

They will take it to the limit.

Only one group of Sox are showing any life

It isn't looking good.

Buchholz let's up 2 runs... and that's more than enough to beat the Sox.
And oh yeah, the Yankees put Vazquez in the rotation, he STINKS and the Yankees STILL win.

It's stuff like that that makes things like "a potential all time great comeback" less and less likely.

At least Manny is acting contrite. That's nice... but that doesn't help the team NOW!

New Cy Young Contenders in the A.L.

After Saturday, it didn't seem like David Price, Jon Lester nor Cliff Lee were really that interested in winning the American League Cy Young Award.

Well if the front runners don't wan to pull away from the pack... then the actual winner could emerge from a much bigger pool.

Trevor Cahill has the lowest batting average against, is neck and neck with Cliff Lee for best WHIP and is third in ERA. His win total of 12 is impressive when you consider he missed April. Since July 28th he is 4-1 with a 0.90 ERA and an 0.85 WHIP averaging 8 innings a start.

Jered Weaver may have had a rough inning tonight but he is still leading the league in strikeouts and his WAR for pitchers is second in the league. (I typed that as if I knew what it meant.)

Justin Verlander won his 14th game today, which means he is a cinch to win 17 or more games for the 4th time in 5 seasons. But he is winning in solid 7 or 8 inning performances and creeping up the strikeout leader board. A dominating September could put him higher up the list.

C.C. Sabathia (sorry, I am still including the punctuation) looks like he will FINALLY be a 20 game winner this season after 19 win seasons in 2007 and 2009. He had won his last 4 starts and done so convincingly. He's gone deep into games and given the bullpen an easy night when he takes the hill... a requirement for a Yankee team with so many question marks in the pitching staff. Sabathia might be keeping them in first on his own.

Clay Buchholz has won his last 5 decisions over 6 starts and done so with ace like numbers. A 1.03 ERA. 2.5 strikeouts for each walk and averaging 6 2/3 innings a start. (He only went 6 today in a rain soaked blowout. Throw in his leading the league in ERA and he may have surpassed Jon Lester as the team's primary Cy Young hopeful.


Now Lester, Price or Lee could have a dominating September and make a mockery of all of this. Or they can come back to the pack and see an AL Cy Young race that is every bit as close as the NL... if not as sexy with dominating candidates but ripe for healthy debate.

Man, I hope Carl Pavano DOES enter this equation.

Nothing wrong with winning...

The Red Sox shouldn't have gone into extra innings today... and once against a good Dice-K outing was spoiled by one bad inning.

And the Red Sox gained no ground because despite another lousy outing by Javy Vazquez (there's NO WAY the Yankees can pitch him in a playoff game, can they?) and a subpar outing by David Price... the Yankees and Rays both won.

In other words they needed extra inning heroics just to stay still.
They are running on a treadmill. But hey! At least it was a win, right?

There are only 7 teams with 70 or more wins right now and the Red Sox are one of them.

And they are on pace to win around 91 or 92 games. Not bad for a team whose DL has read like their All Star ballot.

So let's cheer up and update the tally.
