Sully Baseball Salutes... Jed Lowrie

The Red Sox traded Jed Lowrie and Kyle Weiland to the Astros for reliever Mark Melancon.

It's a smart trade. The Red Sox need to rebuild their bullpen and Jed Lowrie is not a long term answer for the infield. Melancon is talented, piled up saves for an awful Astros team and has a good ERA+. And he's only 26 years old.

But before we bid good bye to Jed Lowrie, let's salute him.
He was part of that 2005 First Round crop that supposedly was going to replenish the Red Sox.

Jacoby Ellsbury has held up his end of the bargain.
When healthy Clay Buchholz has been a stud.
Craig Hansen was supposed to be a the next bullpen ace. It didn't work out that way.
And Jed Lowrie was going to provide depth SOMEWHERE in the infield.

The Sox got the Lowrie pick as a result of losing Orlando Cabrera to the Angels.

And it was against the Angels that he had his greatest moment.

In 2008 Division Series, the Red Sox were the defending World Champions but the Angels were the best team in the American League. If any team looked like they were in a position to unseat the World Champs, it was this Angels team. But the Sox took the first two games in Anaheim and then lost an extra inning thriller in Game 3.

Game 4 was a back and forth affair with the Angels tying the game in the 8th. In the 9th, Jason Bay dropped a bloop double in front of Reggie Willits. With 1 out, Mark Kotsay hit a linedrive that looked like it was going to clinch the series but Mark Teixeira made a diving catch at first base.

Up stepped Jed Lowrie who swung at Scot Shields' first pitch and smacked it into right field. Bay came around to score and the Red Sox were off to the ALCS.

It was the 16th post season series won by the Red Sox.
(7 World Series, 4 ALCS and 5 Division Series).

And as of this writing, it was the last playoff series won by Boston.

In those 16 post season series victories, only 3 ended with a walk off hit.
The 1912 World Series ended when Larry Gardner hit a 10th inning sacrifice fly.
The 2004 Division Series ended with a David Ortiz home run.
And the 2008 Division Series ended with Jed Lowrie's single.

We all jumped up and celebrated that night.

So before you head off to Houston, let's salute Jed Lowrie and say thank you.

And hopefully the number of Red Sox who ended a post season series with a walk off hit will increase before long.

BIG MISTAKE!

He swatted a tie breaking hit in the third inning that gave the Sox the lead. It wasn't the game winning hit. The Yankees would tie and take the lead before homers by Ellsbury and Varitek gave the Sox the cushion for good.



But the Lowrie hit set the tone for me. It was clear that the Red Sox were in a fighting mood.

May 8 - 9-5 win against the Twins. (Dice-K lets up 3 runs in the first but settles down as the Red Sox clobber Carl Pavano.)

May 9 - 2-1 win against the Twins. (A bullpen breakdown cost Beckett the decision but Cark Crawford ended the game with an 11th inning walk off hit.)

May 13 - 5-4 win in the Bronx. (Youkilis homers off of Joba and Bard and Papelbon make it more interesting than it needed to be.)

May 15 - 7-5 win in the Bronx. (Sox fall behind 4-1 but come back as Youk, Papi and Salty all homer.)

May 24 - 4-2 win in Cleveland. (Varitek throws two runners out and homers as the Red Sox win their first game against the Indians.)

OK, show of hands who thought the Red Sox were going to get 3 homers out of Jed Lowrie ALL YEAR!

I sure as hell didn't!

I don't know how long this will last but having Lowrie hitting means that Marco Scutaro will be giving the Red Sox... wait for it... DEPTH!

Of course today started off pretty badly with a leadoff homer by old friend Coco Crisp. And when the A's loaded the bases in the 6th, I thought it was going to become unraveled.

But alas, things broke the right way and lo and behold the Red Sox got a split in Oakland.

The Red Sox are Eric Liddell

The Red Sox are no longer the worst team in baseball. Today's win against the Blue Jays (with Dice-K dealing and Lowrie continuing to go nuts at the plate) put the Red Sox at 5-10.

The Mets are 5-11 as are the Astros. So at least until tomorrow, the Sox are no longer at the bottom.

Now the metaphor that people like to say about the baseball season is "It is not a sprint, it is a marathon." But ironically I think a sprint is illustrating the Red Sox season so far.

There is a great scene in Chariots of Fire, a film that sadly didn't hold up as well as I had hoped. Eric Liddel, played the wonderful late Ian Charleson, is the favorite to win a track event between British and French runners. But on the first turn he falls and everyone, including his rival Harold Abrahams watching in the stands, is stunned. And the incredible Ian Holm mutters "Get up, lad! Get up!"

Liddell got up, the Vangelis music kicked in, and he starts running superfast. You know he was running superfast because it is all in slow motion.

He burst ahead of the other runners and won the race, collapsing in a heap.

That could very well be the Red Sox. Stumbling out of the gate. Looking lost. Even their rivals taking note. And then, composed, taking off at full speed.

Since falling to 2-10 with stupid 7-6 loss last Friday to Toronto, the Red Sox won their next three. They outscored Blue Jays in the three games by a combined score of 21-3.

They head off to Oakland and then to Anaheim and Baltimore. Going 5-4 in that stretch isn't asking a lot.

Bit by bit they'll catch up with the pack.

Cue up the Vangelis.

Welcome home Rich Hill

Boston native Rich Hill made his Red Sox debut today and it looked like a true mop up roll. They had blown a 4-2 lead and the newly acquired lefty finished up the 7th inning facing one batter.

Naturally he got the win.

Now people who hate the win stat will say "Was throwing to that one batter worth a win while David Price and CC Sabathia threw brilliantly yesterday and neither got a win?"

And I would respond "Shove it... he's a native of Boston who got a win in his first Red Sox appearance. There is some poetry there."

There's also poetry in Jed Lowrie's bat coming back and Big Papi getting homer #30 and closing in on RBI #100 in a season where he looked like he was through.

And guess what?
As long as the Sox are not eliminated, I will update this tally.

The Red Sox shouldn't have gone into extra innings today... and once against a good Dice-K outing was spoiled by one bad inning.

And the Red Sox gained no ground because despite another lousy outing by Javy Vazquez (there's NO WAY the Yankees can pitch him in a playoff game, can they?) and a subpar outing by David Price... the Yankees and Rays both won.

In other words they needed extra inning heroics just to stay still.
They are running on a treadmill. But hey! At least it was a win, right?

There are only 7 teams with 70 or more wins right now and the Red Sox are one of them.

And they are on pace to win around 91 or 92 games. Not bad for a team whose DL has read like their All Star ballot.

I'm glad another perennial playoff team is struggling too

Nothing is a bigger boost to your own self esteem than someone else's misery.

And with the Red Sox's playoff hopes teetering, they can at least take solace that they are not that team the Sox always matches up with in the post season.

The Angels needed bullpen help and another bat.

Naturally they got a starting pitcher... and Dan Haren lasted almost 5 innings before he got hit with a line drive.

And today, once again their line up flaws and rotten bullpen were exposed by a Sox team that isn't exactly a world beater.

Another day another great start. And while the Sox didn't gain ground on the Rays, they did pick one up on the Yankees.

It's too early to get excited, but at least there is a glimmer of hope... at the expense of the Angels.

May 2 - 3-2 loss in Baltimore. (Varitek is thrown at home trying to score with 2 outs in the 8th. Sox get swept in the 10th.
May 12 - 3-2 loss against the Blue Jays. (The Sox rally in the 9th comes up a run short and Kevin Gregg gets an ugly save.)
May 15 - 7-6 loss in Detroit. (The Sox blow a 6-1 lead and lose it on a 2 out bases loaded walk in the 12th.)
May 17 - 11-9 loss in New York. (The Sox come all the way back from a 5-0 first inning hole to take a 9-7 lead in the 9th... but Papelbon lets up a 2 run game tying shot to A-Rod and a 2 run walk off shot to Marcus Thames.)
May 21 - 5-1 loss in Philadelphia. (Big Papi's bid for a game tying 9th inning grand slam is caught at the warning track.)
May 27 - 4-3 loss to Kansas City. (Dice-K walks the go ahead run in and lets another score on a wild pitch as the Royals no name bullpen shut down the Hot Sox.)
May 28 - 12-5 loss to Kansas City. (Sox blow a 3-0 first inning lead to be blown out in Fenway.)
June 3 - 9-8 loss to Oakland. (Sox lose a slugfest where two Boston runners are thrown out at home.)

June 6 - 4-3 loss in Baltimore. (Sox rally to tie the game in the 9th only to lose it on a small ball rally in the 11th.)
June 10 - 8-7 loss in Cleveland. (Sox blow an early 5-0 lead and then after rallying in the 9th to take the lead coughed it up with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th)
June 13 - 5-3 loss to Philadelphia. (Sox 9th inning rally comes up short)
June 22 - 2-1 loss in Colorado. (The Sox waste a solid Lester start and twice leave the bases loaded.)
June 23 - 8-6 loss in Colorado. (The Sox batter Ubaldo Jimenez around but Papelbon lets up 2 homers in the 9th to lose it.)
June 25 - 5-4 loss in San Francisco. (The Sox strand 11 runners in the last 4 innings wasting a solid Wakefield performance.)
July 5 - 6-5 loss in Tampa Bay. (Sox spoil a 5-1 lead and 2 homers by Eric Patterson when Dice-K and the bullpen couldn't hold down the Rays.)
July 6 - 3-2 loss in Tampa Bay. (Sox bats go dead and Kevin Youkilis goes down to injury.)
July 7 - 6-4 loss in Tampa Bay. (Matt Garza comes out of the pen, shuts down a late rally as the Rays sweep the Sox.)
July 10 - 9-5 loss in Toronto. (The Sox give Lackey an early 5-3 lead that he couldn't hold.)
July 18 - 4-2 loss to the Rangers. (Lester loses a rare game at home that included a Rangers steal of home.)

July 20 - 5-4 loss in Oakland. (The Sox go up 4-0 after 2 but don't score again and lose it in the 10th)
July 21 - 6-4 loss in Oakland. (Buchholz can't hold on to an early lead as the Sox lose the series.)
July 24 - 5-1 loss in Seattle. (Lester's perfect game is foiled and the Red Sox bats die.)
July 25 - 4-2 loss in Seattle. (Okajima misplays a sacrifice bunt and the Mariners rally in the 8th to win.)

If the Sox win, the Angels will be a .500 team, 8 1/2 games back at the trade deadline.

It may not be a banner year for the Sox, but at least we're not staring down .500.
